Metairie & Jefferson Parish Succession Attorneys

If your family member lived in Metairie, Kenner, Gretna, Harvey, Marrero or anywhere else in Jefferson Parish, their succession is filed at the 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna. Louisiana successions are the only kind of work we do. Jefferson Parish families work with our New Orleans office at 909 Poydras Street, almost always by phone, Zoom and email.

Call (504) 264-1057 or tell us about your case. We respond within one business day.

What a Jefferson Parish succession costs

Most successions we handle are a flat fee, quoted in writing before you sign anything. Fees start at approximately $2,000 to $5,000, depending on the procedure needed. On the first call we tell you which procedure applies and exactly what it costs.

Homes in Metairie and Kenner often push an estate over the $200,000 small-succession limit. When a house is involved, most families need a judgment of possession instead of an affidavit. We tell you which applies on the first call.

How long it takes at the 24th JDC in Gretna

Getting started usually takes 2–4 weeks while we gather documents and prepare the filing. How long it takes to finish depends on the type of case and the procedure needed. On the first call we give you a realistic timeline for your case.

The courthouse is at 200 Derbigny Street, Gretna. After the judge signs, the judgment must be recorded in the Jefferson Parish conveyance records before a sale can close. We handle the recording.

What happens when you call

  1. A 30-minute call with intake. We ask who died, what they owned, whether there is a will, and who the heirs are.
  2. We tell you the procedure and the price. You get it in writing, along with what we need from you.
  3. You sign electronically. Documents that need a notary can be signed at our office or remotely with an online notary.
  4. We file with the 24th JDC and keep you updated until the judgment of possession is signed and recorded.

No office visit needed

We don’t have a Jefferson Parish office, and you don’t need one nearby. Filings, court communication and signatures are all handled remotely. If you want to meet, our New Orleans office is at 909 Poydras Street.

What Jefferson Parish families bring us

  • Selling the family home in Metairie or Kenner. We get the judgment of possession recorded so the title company can close.
  • A surviving spouse sorting out community property. We separate what the spouse already owns from what goes through the succession, so nothing gets tied up in court unnecessarily.
  • A will that needs probating, including handwritten (olographic) wills.
  • Heirs spread across states, all signing remotely.

Who handles your case

Frequently asked questions

My mother lived in Kenner but owned a camp in another parish. Where is the succession filed?

In the parish where she lived: the 24th JDC for Jefferson Parish. The judgment is then recorded in each parish where she owned property.

Is a Jefferson Parish succession different from New Orleans?

The law is the same statewide. The court, filing practices and recording office differ, and we handle both regularly.

Can we use a small succession affidavit for a Metairie house?

Only if the whole estate is under $200,000. With today’s home values, many Metairie estates aren’t.
