Baton Rouge & East Baton Rouge Parish Succession Attorneys
If your family member lived in Baton Rouge, Baker, Zachary, Central or anywhere else in East Baton Rouge Parish, their succession is filed at the 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge. Louisiana successions are the only kind of work we do. Baton Rouge families work with our New Orleans and Covington offices, almost always by phone, Zoom and email.
Call (504) 264-1057 or tell us about your case. We respond within one business day.
What a Baton Rouge succession costs
Most successions we handle are a flat fee, quoted in writing before you sign anything. Fees start at approximately $2,000 to $5,000, depending on the procedure needed. On the first call we tell you which procedure applies and exactly what it costs.
If the whole estate is under $200,000 and the heirs agree, a small succession affidavit may be all you need. See our guide to the small succession affidavit in Baton Rouge. When a house is being sold, or the estate is larger, most families need a judgment of possession instead.
How long it takes at the 19th JDC
Getting started usually takes 2–4 weeks while we gather documents and prepare the filing. How long it takes to finish depends on the type of case and the procedure needed. On the first call we give you a realistic timeline for your case.
The 19th Judicial District Court is at 300 North Boulevard in downtown Baton Rouge. After the judge signs, the judgment is recorded with the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court before a sale can close. We handle the recording.
What happens when you call
- A 30-minute call with intake. We ask who died, what they owned, whether there is a will, and who the heirs are.
- We tell you the procedure and the price. You get it in writing, along with what we need from you.
- You sign electronically. Documents that need a notary can be signed remotely with an online notary.
- We file with the 19th JDC and keep you updated until the judgment of possession is signed and recorded.
No office visit needed
We don’t have a Baton Rouge office, and you don’t need one nearby. Filings, court communication and signatures are all handled remotely. If you want to meet in person, our offices are in New Orleans and Covington.
What Baton Rouge families bring us
- Selling a parent’s house. We get the judgment of possession recorded so the title company can close.
- A surviving spouse sorting out community property. We separate what the spouse already owns from what goes through the succession.
- A will that needs probating, including handwritten (olographic) wills.
- Family living out of state with a parent’s property in Baton Rouge. Everything can be signed remotely. See Louisiana successions for out-of-state heirs.
- A succession that was never opened, sometimes years ago, now holding up a sale or a title.

Frequently asked questions
My father lived in Denham Springs. Is his succession filed in Baton Rouge?
No. A succession is filed in the parish where the person lived. Denham Springs is in Livingston Parish, so it goes to the 21st JDC. Ascension Parish (Gonzales, Prairieville) goes to the 23rd JDC. We handle those courts too.
Is a Baton Rouge succession different from one in New Orleans?
The law is the same statewide. The court, filing practices and recording office differ, and we handle successions across Louisiana.
Do I have to come to Baton Rouge or to your office?
No. Most of our Baton Rouge clients never visit an office. We work by phone, Zoom and email, and documents are signed electronically or with an online notary.
